Just a couple miles west of town is the Santa Fé Trail Center. There's a nice description of the Center at the University of Kansas, but you might want to see some pictures of the Center in a virtual brochure.
The Center is a locally run museum that
is devoted to the history of the Trail. It's well worth the visit. (don't forget to check out the herb garden)
